Legacy
The Legacy, as does the Boreal, draws inspiration from the famous E.M. White18'6" Guide and the Chestnut Prospector canoes. The Legacy is not a copy of either canoe, though it does use the same cross sectional shapes as the White which offered exactly the blend of width and chine shape that I found desirable in a tandem canoe. The Legacy is a little closer to the E.M. White original, while the Boreal is a little closer to the Chestnut Prospector original.
The Legacy has been drawn to meet the conditions of the Canadian Shield canoe country. The length of the White is an advantage in the sometimes shallow rivers of Eastern North America, but it definitely made for a much heavier canoe on the portages. While the Prospector is a very handy canoe, able to carry a significant load, many paddlers are looking for a longer & faster canoe, or perhaps they just need more interior spaces for kids.
Owing to its longer length, the Legacy floats a little higher than the Boreal while carrying the same load. This reduces its need for extra rocker to achieve the same handling characteristics. The Legacy combines 1 1/2” of moderate rocker, gently rising sheer, shallow arch bottom, and lean, clean waterlines, making it an easy paddling, fast, capable, canoe that easily carries a substantial load. This is a canoe to chose for ambitious trips.
