Art Gallery

I don't get to paint much anymore, due to the demands of work and family, and a general frustration with the machinations of the art world.  Here is a sampling of some of my work from over the years.  While some of the work is small, most tends to be big, 3-5' per side.  I feel restrained when working small.  I love the physicality of working large.  Recently, I have been using acrylics for reasons of convenience, but my heart is still with oil paint: it is so much more sensuous and physical, and the colours so much more rich than acrylic.

I am inspired by the presence and timelessness of traditional Icon painting, so I choose to start my gallery with an Icon that I painted for St. Benedict's Priory of Winnipeg.  I also appreciate how the icon painters were able to blend representational elements with abstract qualities.  Among my more modern influences I count Chagall, Matisse, Monet, Van Gogh, and Bonnard. (In no particular order)

I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (honours, painting) from the University of Manitoba in 1986, studying painting under Diane Whitehouse, Ivan Eyre, and Don Reichert.  I also attended the fall/winter term in Lacoste, France at the school of art there while it was operated by the Cleveland institute of Art.  That program continues to offer programs, but is now operated by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)

Further to these studies, I earned a Bachelor of Education degree specializing in secondary art education, from the University of Manitoba, in 1989

I find myself increasingly moving towards more abstract painting.  Even when I work representationally, I still consider the works' abstract aspect very important.

I look forward to returning to my painting.  In the meantime, there are bills to pay...
