Boreal
In the fall of 2003, I was approached with the request to build a Chestnut Prospector canoe. I didn't have a mould for one, and didn't really have any interest in building one. Don't get me wrong, I think that the Prospector is a great canoe, but I felt that, as plenty of builders already were offering a Prospector, I didn't need to add to the world's supply.
I offered a proposition to my potential client: the canoe that I really wanted to build would have the Prospectors proportions, but have the shapes of the E.M. White 18'6" guide canoe. I had used the White cross sectional shapes for the Legacy model canoe, and was really pleased with them as they offered exactly the blend of width and chine shape that I found desirable in a tandem canoe.
The Boreal has clean waterlines flowing smoothly around a 36"maximum width, a shallow arch bottom, slight tumblehome, generous rocker and sheer depth. The 3" of rocker allow the Boreal to carry a significant load while still maintaining a precise sense of maneuverability. The end result met my expectations exactly, and was so successful that it quickly became my second most popular canoe model, after the Red Fox.
As an added bonus, not only is the Boreal a great tandem canoe, but it is one of the nicest canoes for Style Paddling that I've ever had the pleasure of putting in the water.
