Ordering
Call or email to place an order. I work alone and do my best to do all work in a timely fashion. All work is done on a "custom" basis, that is, I don't keep a stock. There are just too many choices and sizes that a client might choose from for me to anticipate every potential order. I book all work on a first come-first serve basis.
While one paddle may not take a large amount of time to complete, it still requires milling to be done, glue and epoxy to cure, and varnishes can only be applied one coat per day. I generally work on paddles in small batches, and I fit these periods of working on paddles in-between working on larger project, i.e. I'm not going to interrupt a big project for just one paddle.
Building a canoe requires a large block of time, and while I'm working on it, it occupies all of my shop time. From milling raw lumber to putting tightening the last thwart bolt takes 3-4 weeks of full time labour, spread over a period of about 8 weeks. Varnish on the hull interior can only be applied one coat at a time, and needs to be done prior to canvassing, the filler requires about 3 weeks of cure time prior to painting, etc..
Shipping
Paddle orders within Canada are sent via Canada Post. Paddle orders to the US and Overseas are sent via UPS. UPS sets its rates per package based upon volume not weight. A paddle package is not heavy, but it falls into the "oversize" category.
Add $35 US for shipping to a US destination. Call for a quote on overseas shipping.
I am not charging for the time and cost of packaging, nor for time it takes to complete all of the paperwork and to make the delivery to UPS.
For shipping of canoes, I have had great success working with D.M. Krenkovitch, a local carrier specializing in the delivery of kitchen cabinets. They are used to carrying easily damaged goods. I deliver the canoe to their shop, and the do what is called "top loading". That is, their load is already paid for, and they ship extra goods in the remaining space in the truck. This allows the rate to be only 30-50% of what a common carrier would charge. The canoe is loaded and is not touched again until it is delivered. While they won't deliver to your door, they will arrange to meet you en-route where you will personally take delivery of the canoe. They deliver along all the major routes and cover pretty much all of North America. I feel that this a pretty fair deal for the savings and the peace of mind of having the canoe delivered safely.
You may, of course, choose to come and pick the canoe up yourself. I love meeting my clients!
